(torque x rpm)/5250 (IIRC)
So you see that HP is nothing more than a factor of torque and rpm; when it comes to cars anyway.
More RPM will yield higher HP. Case in point, the Honda S2000 makes 240hp from 2.0 liters. How? 9000 rpm. Torque is quite low in comparison. Yankton's aero makes tons of torque, with lower HP than many are accustomed to seeing. This is the nature of the turbo SAAB. More revs, in combination with more agressive cams would shift the balance toward HP, but undoubtably some low-midrange torque would be lost.
Manufacturers tout HP numbers like as though they are the cut and dried depiction of a particular car's performance. Many other factors are at work here, but to the American public, HP=fast. Personally I look for a good balance of the two. I have no wish to rev a car to 9K just to feel it go, but I find cars that "shoot the wad" low in the rev range to be quite dull as well.
