No advice, just some observations. Something you might have noticed welding, is the spark gap will influence both the amount of power required to bridge it, and the the delay between when current is applied, and when a flux path is established. ie: the bigger gap, is a later spark (Probably not any real influence in the gap range and voltage range we are working with here). As for ignition timing, it's everything. I just tuned the spg the other day, brought my clean 7EV's back to min spec gap, and reset timing, and it's spinning tires through 3rd again (granted, crappy tires).
