The 4 speed in my 1977 is very stong. It has about 300K miles on it and I can drop it from 4th to second without worry. The trannie is much louder than the refined 5 speed in my 88 SPG. But I'm on my third trannie for the SPG and only have 260K miles on the car. I had to replace the ODO at 251K miles and now show 13K miles so i'm off about 100 miles(to dealer after going to work one morn and not seeing milage changing).
The last two trannies have lasted just past 100 K miles each. I've never replaced the trannie in my GL.
But you are correct that the old 99 only had about 105 to 112 HP depending on the model with the EMS topping at the 112 mark. But As long as I keep good oil in the 4 speed, I've had no problems pushing past readline and doing High rpm down shift to take a corner. And the trannie is OEM and synchromesh.
