M1 0W-40 would EASILY last 5,000 miles in a Saab turbo. It's got GM's new GM-LL-A-025 eco-spec for up to two years or 18,000 miles in the new Saab turbos. (This is the maximum life based on GM's oil life monitor keeping track of your driving style & other factors. Of course, the sumps also hold 50% more oil (6L vs 4L) than previous models.) My oil's very dirty looking, but part of that is due to the engine detergents which keep it going this long.
I'm currently finishing up a 10,000 mile/18 month run on 4L of the 0W-40 in my '99 9³. Used oil analysis showed the oil's still in great shape, but trace metals are a little higher than I'd like to see. Because of this, I'm switching to the new M1 5W-40. It's a closer match to Saab's OE oil additive formulations, & the viscosity is better for the way our turbos mistreat oil. I'd rather use M1 15W-50, but the winters here in Northern Colorado get too cold for me to be comfortable with it (yet).
I could change my oil more often, but since my used oil analysis showed the oil was still in good shape, all it would do is give me an artificially low trace metal count from too-frequent changings. (That is, since my oil's still in good shape, getting rid of it wouldn't protect my engine any better, it would only make me FEEL better because I'm changing it unnecessarily.) Oh, & it would also waste more of my time & money.
