Octane levels also are tightly controlled in Colorado. Regular-grade gasoline averages about 85 octane, mid-grade about 87 and premium about 91. Because altitude and climate influence octane requirements, cars and trucks in Colorado usually do not need fuels with as high an octane as in some other states to operate well.
Octane ratings basically have to do with pre-ignition, pressure (compression ratio), and the air/fuel mixture. Lean conditions (more air than fuel) contribute to the condition. Because the oxygen level is less in Colorado due to the elevation, the rest of our air being inert gasses, the chances of pre-ignition are less. Therefore less octane is required which also lowers emmissions and is mandated by the state.
Running lower than the recommended octane is usually fine due to the safety margins built in to the recommendations by the manufacturer. The problem might be if you have severely modified your compression levels by increasing boost to within a hair of predetonation. Then you'll need special higher octane racing fuels.
