EGR removal = knock? ('90 SPG)

Bringing this message over from the C900BB in hopes of finding some more C900's with removed EGR.
Pulled the defunct EGR off my '90 SPG a few weeks ago and have noticed my boost is now erratic. I didn't swap in a later ECU and did originally get a CEL light but cured it with a resistor in the old harness pin (same trick was used to defeat it during fussy winter months). Before I dig through all the apc items and poss. vac. leaks I'm wondering if any of the other EGR removal guys have experienced this. Also, when reving the engine high rpm (stationary) the apc sol is clacking. I don't recall this as normal behavior which may shed light on my diagnosis, but I just want to rule out EGR first.
By the way, without the EGR my idle is much smoother - now a stable 900, from a loopy 1000-1100.
Thanks.
