What I learned from the Speed Channel

I saw a boffo Speed Channel documentary on the history of drag racing the other day. What I found most interesting was the science and art of increasing the HP on a standard V8 block engine. Granted, the engine block on a top fuel drag racer is larger, but the design is the same. So is the cylinder head and head gasket, fuel injection and intake. The key, as most of you know, is ramming as much fuel (nitromethane) and air into the cylinders as possible, then igniting it with a hot enough spark, then getting the spent gasses out as soon as possible. At one point they had a glass tube simulating a cylinder to observe the amount of fuel spraying from an injector at both idle and full throttle. 1.5 gallons of fuel goes through the engine in one second during wot. That's impressive.
Anyway, for some wild stats on drag racing engines such as "Dual magnetos apply 44 amps to each spark plug. This is the output of an arc welder in each cylinder." head to this web page
