... it's just confusing when that happens. I have a 90 9k turbo, and with very little modifications around 100,000 miles that happened to me like 3 times in one year. Also in 2nd gear too. I think all three times i was at a stop light, not trying to RACE anyone for say, but rather trying to move lively across the intersection i guess.... you know, to just keep traffic moving. ;) anyways... the first time i was totally clueless... as you say the engine just revs and revs, and no matter what gear you're in you go no where. because the one axle that's broken gets all the power cause theres less resistance... crappy right? You'd at least hope you could still drive in a big complete circle with the one good axle, i suppose this would help gain the attention of the local towing services! Hehe. As for me, i was blocking one whole lane of traffic in the middle of winter on a busy city street. Ouch.
anyways, i'm not sure why this problem kept repeating itself... either because i'm a very unlucky person, and i had 3 inner drivers go bad cause of the part itself... or possibly the mechanic installed them wrong each time??? or, i had some feeling that i was driving the car wrong somehow, and it's something I'M doing...
I was new to saabs at this time... and the clutch system just seemed different to me than anything i'd driven before. I had a suspicion that, when i was shifting, i wouldn't have the engine at high enough RPM's, and I'd let the clutch out too fast, just kind of locking everything up for a second and making a little clunk feeling before giving it more gas and accelerating again. I was shifting pretty low ALL the time, like 2 on the tach or below... dont see why this would be the cause though, i just never figured it out. I've had the same new replacement now though for 10,000 miles holding strong, so i guess it could have been another problem that needed fixing that caused the inner driver to fail so often... broken motor mount maybe?
good luck, hope it doesn't happen to you again
