30-40% is a ridiculous number. Loss is going to be more like (Friction Losses in Tranny gears) + (Friction losses in each diff) + ("Overhead" for each driveshaft). Only some of those (and then only partially) are based on the total output. For example, more torque may push tranny gear teeth together "harder" and cause more frictional losses, but it's not proportional to power.
So the 35-40% number may have made sense on an old car making 120 crank HP and with relatively unsophisticated gear engineering. On a modern, higher horsepower car, the loss is far less. STis consistently dyno, on all but the most uselessly-low-reading dynos, around 250whp, comparable to Evos. That's only 16% or so.
AWD isn't as big a drain as it may seem.
