You have to do is look at the real world examples around you and study them. Like so many things you have to ask your self "what do I want this thing to do?
Pulling up trees by their roots= I would go for low end torque
pulling a boat = low to mid
nice car to drive in traffic = mid
sports sadan = mid to high high like a BMW
race car = you want it high but you have to then look at the gearing of the car and be sure that the peak HP is just before red line then when the car is shifted the RPM should fall back to just before peak torque. The gearing will set up how wide/peaky you have to make the power. Shooting for BMW around town is alot better than driving an S2000 is traffic.
Patrick I know you had thought of all that and what you wanted to know was more like... BMW 330IS or S2000? All I know about that is I want to drive the BMW all week and take my S2000 to the track on the weekend.
