What's nice about owning one of these critters for a good length of time, plus working on them and studying this site is that you can diagnose most problems on the fly while driving, or at least make reasonable educated guesses, plus rethink new ways of doing things or improving performance. An ongoing calculation that never seems to end - all while on the way to buy milk and bread. Every day seems to provide a different insight. Like today - here in So Cal the temps have dipped down after that series of storms blew through. Add the humidity factor and it makes for perfect turbo boosting weather. Having added an FMIC I've never really tested the limits of this recently installed 86 engine mated with an 82T CIS fuel delivery system. I always seem to pull back at the upper limit in 3rd and 4th, near 10 psi. Maybe cuz there's no reasonable way to test the upper limits on congested city highways. Well, with this cool moist weather, I've noticed how the turbo has come to life in a surprising way. Specifically, I can reach the limit of the wastegate setting sooo quickly when I stay on the pedal. Today at sea level (literally, ocean was 50 feet away), I surged away from a redlight so fast, within seconds it felt like a parachute had opened behind me when the wastegate popped open around 12 psi. Instantly the calculations began about how to control and maintain boost based on things I've learned here. Fuel delivery, timing, in and out breathability, torque issues, drivetrain, tires...
