I work on the 9-3 mostly but every now and then get 9-5 questions thrown my way in terms of improving performance. Intercoolers simply work the best when the have as much direct air on them as possible. Unfortantly Saab does not share the point of view and has put a license plate in the front of the front air dam of the 9-3 and 9-5. We need to keep this license plate on the front of the car simply because for most of us it is a state law, but we can improve the air flow over the intercooler in just a few minutes of time by relocating the front license plate without any additional drilling.
1. Remove your front license plate.
2. Remove the license plate holder securing to the bumper.
3. When you remove the plate holder you will notice that there are two holes per side about three inches above or below one another.
4. Reinstall the plate holder using the lower hole into the higher holes orginal placement.
5. reattach license plate.
Doing this will allow for another better air flow over your intercooler for better cooling and increase your performance at no additional cost. Not a huge upgrade but then again it's for free.
