Wrong. The ECU does not control power, ever, it attempts to control the torque. It does not really do that, but controls air flow, which roughly controls torque. When you reduce intake and exhaust restrictions for a given ECU program, the turbo has to work less hard to reach its target air flow. The short side of that story is that the result is lower exhaust manifold back pressure (which can be well over 30PSI!), and that backpressure reduction translates directly into increased torque for that given air flow. And there are a few other secondary and synergistic effects that I will not go into. I have written about this before in greater depth. I have a low restriction drop in air filter and a 3" turbo back system. Nice improvement with the stock ECU software. Also a SMBC which helps a lot too. Good with the manual gear boxes, but with the 5 spd automatics probably less to gain as the autobox and turbo work so well together.
