You need the saab tool to 'eaisly' press the chain back together and flare out the pin ends so it does not fall apart.
This can be done with a regular motorcycle/dirtbike chain breaker a hammer, and a small block of metal to use as a backing when hammering/flaring the end of the pin. I did one this way or a friend about four years ago and the car is still going... but the saab tool makes it really easy and it is the correct way to this i.e. the way I would and did put the chain together on my car... although it is quite an investment for a one time use.
Are you sure the spring was not still in the tensioner when you took it out? Which would obviously extend the plunger all the way.
Good Luck,
Cutic
