Without GM, the SAAB brand would soon be dead. Who knows maybe it still will die. Re-badging may not be a perfect solution right now, but it is unfortunately quite necessary. SAAB needs to sell more cars in order to become profitable or at the very least attract new buyers. Frankly, the re-badged Trailblazer looks alot better with SAAB styling. I would ask why didn't GM style it like SAAB has. Its actually a very attractive SUV now. When you say the brand is being killed, I imagine you are talking about the quirkiness. Well in my opinion, quirkiness does not sell cars except to a select few and if you want to become profitable and survive, you have to become more mainstream.
I talked with a SAAB dealer not long ago who said that SAAB engineering is fine but that SAAB management is horrible. They always over promise and then under deliver on everything they do and say. GM obviously knows how to make money and SAAB management needs GM's help. It should be interesting in the coming years to see what happens with the brand.
I love the SAAB brand and have owned a total of three - a 1985 900T(sold), a 1988 900 SPG, and a 2000 9-5 Aero. I hope that SAAB survives so that I can remain a SAAB owner for years to come. I say, learn to appreciate what each generation of SAAB cars has to offer.
