Exhaust manifold EGT pyrometer

I'm considering adding an exhaust temp gauge to my car. Two questions:
1) The pyro sensor is best mounted on the exhaust manifold above the turb. Would you dare tap a 1/8" hole at the EGR spot w/o removing the mainfold?
Wondering if metal chips might kill my turbo. I have heard of diesel turbo owners drilling with the engine running and getting away with not removing the manifold.
2) If exh/man removal if required, is it possible w/ TD04 2.3 5spd to remove the exhaust manifold only, leaving the turbo, oil/water lines, and cylinder head all in place?
In other words just pull the radiator fan housing, 4 bolts to the turbo (hopefully not breaking any) and remove the 12 exhaust studs and pull it off. Anyone ever try this?
