Yes, the intake needs to be off the vehicle so no metal get down in the engine. After your done make sure to clean it very throughly. The holes on the my intake I threaded for 1/2 pipe.
If your looking for a purely functional part, you can get all the parts you will need from the hardware store for a couple bucks. If your looking for function and good looks expect to spend. I spent about $50-60 a location to make my blue anodized vacuum fitting.
