GM,
So sorry to hear about your cylinder head gasket as I hear you have been developing quite a nice 900!
Copper head gaskets will work effectively but are certainly require more installation allowances. Both mating surfaces of cylinder head and block face must be free of imperfections, the sealant must be applied to the gasket very evenly, etc.
We have done quite a bit of work with the copper head gaskets and have found that the inert gas annealed copper is the only material capable of sealing at coolant chambers. We have seen that a majority of aftermarket copper gaskets are not annealed or have a non inert gas annealing (much less uniform than inert gas annealed).
Copper is a fantastic material for heat dissipation, combustion chamber sealing, and reuse (gasket may be used over and over which is great for race use or frequent engine rebuilds). The gaskets are also less prone to fail under detonation or excessive combustion chamber pressures.
We have also found that the factory ELRING gasket and new hardware should allow for 300+ BHP capabilities. Detonation is the killer of the ELRING gaskets as they will be easily distorted but we have had no problems with these gaskets seeing very high charge pressures. 20-25 psi is not uncommon for street applications and we have one 1/4 mile race customer up to 32 psi using the factory ELRING gasket!
Best of luck with your 900 and regards!,
GSK at SWEDISH DYNAMICS,INC.
