Holy s#!t, my turbo!

So I was driving back from a bike race on Saturday when I went to pass some dude going 10 under. We were doing 55, and I downshifted into 4th then 3rd. As we were neck and neck, I hear this pop!, followed by a large cloud of white smoke out of the tailpipe.
I limp it into town, and ask another mountain biker if he has a socket set in his van. He just happens to say yes, and in the hour and a half while I'm waiting for my girlfriend to come pick me up, I remove the blasted thing from my car.
Tonight I finally got around to giving the thing an autopsy, and wow, I trashed the thing good. The turbine was broken off the shaft, and it had melted a crater into the end of the center section. There was also a big (1x1") piece of the center section that had broken off and was just floating around in there. The bushing and seat were broken in half, and fell out when I shook the thing.
I don't even understand how this happened, but there was some stuff that looked like sand in the heat shield inside the turbine housing. That probably had something to do with it, huh? Anyway, I just thought I'd share my F'd up catastrophic failure story with you. A big Thanks goes out to Andy E who hooked up me up with a good replacement!
Chris
P.S. If you're in Fairplay, CO in the next week, and you see a red convertible parked in the Napa parking lot, feel free to kick it.
