Problems with setting timing retard to about 8?

Hi all,
Trying to fine tweak the timing on my '89 900T. The APC has been modified, 3.0 FPR and the AID mod which gives me about 8 degrees retard under pressure.
I notice that when the timing is at 20 (retard under boost goes to 14), I get a lot more low end power but virtually no boost (barely touching red). When the timing is at 16 (retard under boost to about 8) I get a lot more boost (3/4 red) but less low end power.
At 20, I also think that I get worse gas mileage. From what I've read, I think this is the opposite of what is expected with more advanced timing so it may be due to me enjoying the low end more while driving.
Anyway, I plan on further adjusting the AID so that I get about 12 degrees of total retard under pressure so that I can set my timing to 20 and have it retard down to 8.
8 seems to be the magic number for my car.
Are there problems with having it retard that low or even lower?
I plan on getting larger injectors down the road but for now I'm working with what I have. People have also suggesting putting a relief valve in line to the AID to decrease the rate at which the retard comes on.
Would putting a regular adjustable valve that can fully close accomplish the same thing by restricting the flow to the aid?
Thanks.
Tushy
