I'm of the opinion that heat wrap type products are a bad idea. They do trap heat in the exhaust system to some extent which leads to increased exhaust scavenging (on a NA motor,) better turbo spooling if done ahead of the turbo, and lower under hood temps. However, the wrap tends to trap moisture and can also let exhaust components get too hot. I have seen exhaust headers rot out very prematurely and end up being held together virtually by the wrap only. Because of this, I would not wrap the down pipe. It is an expensive part and the gains would be nominal at best since it is post-turbo. You may consider wraping the exhaust manifold as it is cast iron and unlikely to ever rot out. Again, I would not expect any significant gains. Some on this BB have ceramic coated the manifold which is more expensive but a much better process.
