You don't say what year or type of brakes, but the older style Girling (pre-88) are notorious for developing problems, especially as they age and ache for a rebuild or replacement. One such problem is brake squeeling under light application. I recently refurbished both front calipers because they developed a parking brake seize problem after a pad replacement job. The left side PB sometimes wouldn't release completely and they'd smoke the brakes while driving. The brakes were also squeeling under light demand.

To set this up properly, you have to know that where I live we just had a very messy muddy rainy season where I live, so the possibility of accumulated mud and moisture fouling the calipers was a likely factor behind the problems. When I pulled the left side caliper and inspected, it was obvious what happened. The rubber seals on both sides had ruptured and allowed mud and moisture to corrode the piston/seal contact surface, especially the inner piston. That alone explained how the PB was seizing after the brake pad replacement. When the caliper was reset to accomodate the thicker pads, the piston seals were repositioned over a corroded contact surface, which kept the inner piston from moving freely when the PB spring was released, thus keeping yoke pressure on the outer pad. That also explained the squeeling for the same reason - when the brakes were applied lightly, the outer piston (and inner pad) was activated before it's opposite, causing a mismatched pressure on the rotor thus setting up a vibration.

After both caliper units were cleared of gunk and corrosion, the PB mechanism cleaned out (they were gummed up from old dry grease) with solvent and refilled with high temp grease, the piston surfaces and seals properly lubed with high temp caliper grease, reassembled and installed, then filled with fresh fluid and properly purged of air, the brakes work like new again. Immediate, solid (SS hoses on all four calipers) and silent under all conditions with no PB seizing problem.
