"Interesting results. I know a mildly tuned 9000 2.0 does about 170 km/h indicated in a 400m run where a 540i 6spd (with the same good driver) did a bit less. Of course this will change at higher speeds where drag and power become more important, but I have a hard time understanding how a correctly running 300+HP 9000 should be slower than a heavier 286HP 540i in an 1800m run. At least not if you don't count the driver as a factor."

As long as the std turbo is in place, I would not talk about a 300+ hp car.
Also we need to remember that how long do you have this power, maybe 3s, 10s or even 30s? I dont recall if we ever had that discussion on this board, but running a small turbo "flat" out is never a good solution in terms of long term power delivery . We know the "HIPO" quotes from various tuners, which say 300hp with virtually std HW. In real life though these figures can be obtained IF certain variables stay with in resonable limits, these paramters would be, the ambient temp, throttle body temp, knock etc.
So, once the run becomes long enough, at some point the car will start to loose power. For instace tuners have set safety limts on SW's, like if temp in throttle body goes beyond 50Deg C timing will be reduced by xx deg and airmass pulled back by XX mg/C. Basically after a while the will perform like stock...
On the other hand if we look at the factory tuned BWM, we know that is has been built for loooooong flat out runs, like daily driving on German autobahn, so it most likely will not loose power during a 1800m ;)

So there are 300hp cars and 300hp cars, with the difference that some of them keep on accelerating and some fail to do so. I personally call them "dynoqueens" :)

"Another interesting test would be a rolling start 1000-1500m test where the cars start at a speed of say 50km/h or something like that. I suspect that the removed difference in launching advantage would change the overall scores quite a bit."

Yes a top speed test failes to show which car did reach the 1800m first = the winner is unknow if the speed difference is not not huge. How ever the driver or launch style has very little to play with the final results, due to the lengt of the run. For instace do a “perfect” lauch with a car that has grip (four wheel drive) you will reach 50km/h at 15m from the line. With a "bad" lauch, lets give it a whole 50m until the speed is obtained. Assuming that with the poorer lauch the car did achieve 240km/h at finnish line. This means that the better lauching car would achieve the same speed at 1765m, having an additional ~0.5s to accelerate. At speeds above 230km/h there would hardly be any change on the reading, see my video above
