Amateur Ignition Timing Woes

I can't find the timing mark! I'm trying to retard the ignition timing because I have a Stage II Group 9 APC, Jak Stoll Stage I chip, 3" exhaust, 30 lb/hr injectors and 3.0 bar FPR on a 1988 900 Turbo Convertible 16 valve.
Unlike the photo in the Bentley manual, I look through a window in the plastic cover for the clutch and see three raised lines, with nothing on the flywheel. No nicely calibrated degreem marks, no "0", no nothing.
I've double checked the plug leads to make sure I was on No. 1,
I did the roll the car in 5th thing, watching with a flashlight, I've tried it with distributor vacuum line off and on (there's no noticeable vacuum at idle). It looks like somebody put a "dot" on the flywheel, but it shows up when the timing light is on No. 3, not No. 1.
I'm sure the professionals would no exactly how to do this, but it's been a long time since I was doing this daily. It occurs to me that I've had pros work on my Saabs for decades, so I really don't have current experience.
What am I doing wrong? How do I set ignition timing with a timing light?
