Jon
about five years ago I bought a data logger that simply recorded RPM vs time with a combination of pickups that allowed use with most cars including all saabs and any car with spark plug wires, plus WRX, BMW M series ect.....
The most important part of this system was the software that allowed you to correlate this data to engine performance. In addition the ability to calibrate it to eliminate all the parameters that would ordinally affect the numerical results. The software and the quality of the data logger was what made this system work. The system was called "Road Dyno" and is every bit as accurate as any inertial dyno such as Dynojet ect...as long as the software can deal with all the variables.
I feel a rpm based system can be much better than any acellerometer based system if the software allows for proper calibration.
