That sounds hopeful! It's been a year or two since I had the heads off so I can't picture it but I'll figure it out. The manual tells how to inspect and when to replace the tappets, but it doesn't mention a way to remove them from the top. I know the push-rods nearly fall out when the heads are lifted off the engine so I'll look beneath them once I start dissecting. Thanks for the tip.
