Hey Scott,
The coil spring on the Sonett and 96 sits in a little holder on top of the upper A-arm. If you relax the suspension by jacking up the car and letting it hang, there is still significant pressure on the spring. So if you remove the bolts from the upper ball joint, you are also removing them from the spring holder. So the spring, still in tension, is just sitting there. It could let loose. I've heard stories of it hitting the floor then going straight through the shop ceiling. It still has that much stored energy! Imagine if some part of your body was in the way! So you don't need to compress it really, just hold it by taking a bit of the tension off with a spring compressor.
Let me know if you would like more detail on the other parts of taking out the axle. It's really quite straight forward.
