For anyone reading this in the future (like I am today), high octane fuel is NOT the way to increase power. At least not alone. Higher octane doesn't meant more power. Basically, the higher the octane, the greater the pressure needed for the fuel to spontaneously combust.
As you know, your cylinders build up pressure as the piston travels up. If you had a really low octane fuel, the air/fuel mixture would explode quite early (before your spark) which will counteract what you want to happen which is help force the piston down. So you lose power and possibly destroy part of your engine.
Now, starting from a stock engine setup, one method to increase power is to advance the engine timing. Essentially you are changing when the explosion in your cylinder occurs relative to the position of the piston. This can increase power, but also the chances of premature detonation. At this point, you can counteract this problem with higher octane fuel. But if your engine is already set properly and not having any detonation issues, going to higher octane is just a waste of money.
