Start by making sure it has resistor wires, and rotor.
Put a rf capacitor on the ign. coil and alternator.
We used to put a grounded screen over the engine on the Sonett III's
AM radio waves are longer than FM and require a longer antenna mast, I think 39 inches, nut my memory is suspect these days<g> Also a grounded metal plate under the antenna mount will help make a stronger signal.
The best location for the antenna is a rear fender, The cable must be very good. and ground connections good & clean ( the outside) the center prong is the signal from the antenna.
Take a look at a Corvette sometime, they shield the whole distributor and plug wires, and have rf capacitors on almost everything electrical in the car, and ground straps on the exhaust system even!
I suggest throw the radio away and listen to the car<G>
That said, I do carry a portable radio with weather band in the glove box. Throw the radio away and you too will have a glove box<G>
Good luck, RGS
