Adjust valves when cold.
Remember old saying "Loose valves don't burn"
So if in doubt choose loose rather than tight.
You would have to mess up position of cam when adjusting valves rather than measured clearance to cause loss of compression (miss at idle) I would suspect.
Piston has to be up on comp. stroke when you adjust the valves
I would recheck, can't hurt, Good luck.
