Brian and kansas basically covered it, but here are a couple of more tips.
1) The speedo cable will feed through the hole in the firewall where the cables from the other gauges go and then go down to the screw on connector location on the transaxle. The tip of the actual cable itself will go into a square hole and then the connector screws on to the threads at that connection point.
2) If you do end up having a cable made, make sure they make it long enough. The previous owner of my '71 Sonett apparently had a cable made, but it was not quite as long as it should have been so the cable was stretched under tension which caused it to have to take a sharper than wanted turn to go into the transaxle. Sharp turns on a speedo cable are not good. :-)
3) You will also want to check if the plastic gear inside the transaxle is still intact/functioning. Sometimes these wear out or break, and then it cannot turn the cable.
