Identify metal pieces in trannsmission fluid

I recently purchased a 1974 Sonett that I towed back to my garage. I was told it had been years since any fluids were changed so set about changing them. As I drained the transmission fluid I noticed a large number of metal pieces (not shavings) on the magnetic drain plug. I poured in more fluid with the magnetic plug in to capture as many metal pieces as possible.
Something in the tranny is clearly broken. It will be a while before I have the engine running and turn my attention to the transmission. In the mean time, does anyone know what these metal pieces might be from? This will give me an idea of what I am in for when I get around to the transmission.
Here are the pictures.

Thanks.
