I always use two quarts of 75W. Sometimes Redline and sometimes Valvoline Synthetic, which is what Saab guru Jack Lawrence recommends.
There's been lots written on the VSaab gearbox...there are two weak links- the freewheel which was designed for the low HP two stroke, and the shaft nuts loosening up. If you have your gearbox out, you should do a little investigation for sure. See Jim Williams excellent overview with pictures at http://jlw97.fatcow.com/saabstories/ Look at the "transaxle autopsy" folder.
If your gearbox is quiet and working okay, then keep your oil fresh, listen for any changes, and PLAN to take it out at some point and do what Jim did as a minimum. The point is, the shaft nuts WILL loosen, and you want to catch it before significant wear takes place in the ring and pinion.
