I just got my 74 Sonett III back on the road today. The trunk floor was rusted out, the tunnel area was rotted out, and the fan bearing was noisy. I used Jack Ashcraft's kit for the trunk floor. It fit pretty well, but for it is pretty much impossible to make that repair without it looking somewhat patched up. Nothing a little seam sealer couldn't fix. I made my own sheet metal pieces to fix the tunnel area. Not the prettiest repair, but with seam sealer and satin black paint, it looks okay. At least now I know it is safe. If anyone is considering these repairs, buy a plasma cutter. It really makes things go faster. I bought mine open box at Eastwood for $279. It is a really neat tool. you'll want to cut all kinds of stuff with it just for fun!
As for the fan bearing, I happened to be parting out a 900 that had an aftermarket ultra-thin fan. It fit perfectly in the sonett, and didn't require cutting the timing cover, or taking the old fan bearing out. I used all the OE SAAB connectors and wiring from the 900, so it actually looks fairly stock. Nothing looks out of place. I ended up taking the radiator out to resolder the small upper tube. What a goofy set up that is.
Anyway, what a pleasure it is to drive now. So much quieter. I guess the old girl has a few more years left in her!
