As others have suggested, a great tip is to put a nice, clean sheet of white cardboard under the axle to catch the needle bearings if--er, WHEN you knock one of the bearing caps against the frame of the car. Much better than grubbing about in the nasty, gritty 40-year-old muck in the bottom of the engine compartment while cursing elaborately. I've also had luck with putting a rubber glove or ziplock baggie on the end of the drive shaft before withdrawing it from the car.
