Morgan, the wear which takes place to the synchronizer cone(s), which are gold coloured, you can not see is on their inner surfaces. Grooved rings like on a vinyl music record act to break the speed of the turning gear shaft as the synchronization assembly is pushed over it to lock the various gears to the shaft. When the grooves are worn out then that synchronizer cone is worn out and no clearance will be found. Therefore the shaft is able to continue to spin when the synchronization assembly tries to engage and lock up to the gear. This is why you get a grind/crunch when down shifting.
Using your photo for reference. One checks the condition of each of the synchronizer cones by way of feeler gauge measurements. Measure the clearance between the bottom edge of the synchronizer cone and the lower locking teeth of the gear shown as stamped W 23. The synchronization assembly above the synchronizer cone is stamped B 17. Hope this helps you and others as well.
