I guess you could manage it with a stock transaxle as long as you didn't mind doing a lot of rebuilds! Seriously, the Saab factory rally effort got 160-170hp out of these engines (normally aspirated) and put it through heavily-massaged stock transaxles... the main secret seems to have been that they changed them often...
...instead, though, you might want to go to Chris Moberg's Sonett site (at dubyah-dubyah-dubyah-vintagesaab dot com), visit the "Sonett Secrets" section, and read Jack Lawrence's article on 'The Making of a National Champion' Sonett race car. Jack L. eventually wound up going to a completely different transaxle, although as much for a wider choice of ratios as for reliability. Somewhere in the 'Rogues' Gallery' section of this site, I think you can also find a picture of a spiffy turbo conversion by Bud Clark... very sanitary-looking.
