Disaster with my Trans!!

I think I did something wrong!
On theweekend I finished reinstalling the Trans in my Sonett.
to save money on shipping to Australia I only gotthe rear half shipped to me.
On thejourney it got the top cover (selector plate) damaged so I needed to swap that with th eoriginal trans which had a noisy diff.
Anyway all went well and I finished the job, all fluids right level etc.
Adn shift seemeing to change smoothly
So I drove the Sonett to work today about 20 miles all perfect.
No overun noise, steady speedo.
Tonight I Left to come home slipped it into 2nd and bang!
Lots of bad noise and no 1st, 2nd or reverse but I do have 3rd and 4th but quite noisy.
I suspect in changing the top selector plate over I did something wrong and/or setting up the shifter and it may have tried going into 2nd an d4th at once.
Any ideas??
A big job now to strip and build a trans out of both!
