Good evening everyone. It's a bittersweet occasion that brings me to SAABnet as a member. I've been here before observing, but before now I haven't owned a Sonett since high school (more than 30 years ago now). Back then I had a '73 Sonett III that was painted primer gray with a green spot on the roof just behind the windshield and had a bad freewheel gear, but was otherwise in fantastic shape. Last I knew it went to our friend in Wilmington, DE either as a parts car or a restoration project. If you know the car, I'd love the update.
What brings me back is the loss of my father on February 4th. He bought his first '73 in 1976 when I was seven and he's had at least three that I can recall since then. The first was orange, the second was a green '74 that I went and checked out for him in Kansas about 15 years ago, and when he died he had two in the garage: a wine-colored '72 (Sonja) and the orange '73 that now sits in my driveway. I drove my inheritance back here to central Illinois from Florida over last weekend and, aside from a split plug wire and a wonky timing issue, she made it here with flying colors.
I'm sure I'll be taking advantage of your vast knowledge base over the next few months as I get her back in tip-top running order, so thank you in advance for your help and for the massive amount of information already here on the board. I know dad got plenty of information from all of you and was grateful to have SAABnet as a resource, but I don't know if or how much he posted. If you knew him, I'm sure you liked him - everyone did. I hope I'll be able to participate not just as a student but also as an occasional purveyor of useful information. I'll be adding videos to my youtube channel as work on the car goes on (there's surprisingly little as it is), so I'll post links when the videos go online.
In the meantime here's a shot of my girl in her new home on the day she made it here. Good news is as soon as I get her registered here, the "Sonett 3" vanity tag will once again be available in Florida. If you get it, wear it with pride and say a quick thanks to my dad.
Cheers,
-Trogdor
