I've always been able to get them loose with a strong tap from a hammer. Another way is to loosen the bolts and turn it over a few times. Of course if you don't have much compression, it may not do it. Never try to pry a head off...you probably know that.
I've burned a couple of valves a few times, and had a head gasket leak once or twice. Never had ring problems or holes in pistons.
Let us know how it goes.
