Going off my previous experience, locking the freewheel out has little effect. The slipping / grinding still happens, it just re-engages once the load is taken off. The Sonett III I had in high school did exactly the same thing. Honestly, it makes me wonder if that one has a bad mount and / or missing nut too. Either way, it didn’t solve the problem. But the real answer to your question is because I like it. I like the feel of the freewheel better, I like shifting without the clutch, and I like having a driving experience no other car can give me.
As to the cause of the grind, I think you’re absolutely right. The loose mount let the input shaft jiggle around and changed the angle of the torque and caused a loose connection somewhere in that system which in turn caused the grind. So far, with the properly situated mounts and nuts, problem solved! Thanks!
