Charles,
I agree with your perspective on the rear brakes. Additionally, we know front provides the majority of braking power- a number like 80% is often quoted. So starting off with new shoes, which are available, and turned drums (even with some pitting as you point out) will be just fine.
And know that 95 and 96 drums are interchangeable with the Sonett.
Funny story- years ago, I adjusted the shoes on my first Sonett (nicknamed "the Beast") a little aggressively. The next day I was headed up to a graduate class at Univ of Vermont and was "driving right along" as they say, even thought the road was wet from a previous rain. I turned on a side road to bypass traffic and accelerated up the hill. The road had a fresh coat of tar. With rain on top. I was just shifting into 4th as I rounded a slight corner... and a truck backed out of a driveway right in front of me. I hit the brakes pretty hard (Sonett's don't have vacuum assist, so you have to do that anyway). Instantly the rears locked and passed me as I did a quick 360 or two and went off the road backwards into a small ditch. I turned off the engine and sat there, my heart racing, catching my breath. Then the driver of the truck was at my window screaming at me for being such an idiot. My response? "I AM an idiot! I'm so so sorry!" That immediately defused things. He then said "No harm done- looks like the car is okay- let's get you outta the ditch and on your way." Now I'm pretty sure I would have had no problem stopping for the truck if the rears weren't wound in so tight. But that was no excuse for not recognizing the conditions.
