I bought a '74 new and replaced the entire exhaust about three times. It was my fault mostly (I liked to take the car fishing), but its pretty low anyway. I eventually came up with a fairly bullet proof system. It was all custom and used four glass pack mufflers. I stuck with the original diameter tubing and it stayed quiet. One of the best things you can do is install some extra hangers forward of the resonators (the front glass packs). Make sure you pull up the mats/boards in the passenger compartment so you don't run some bolts through a brake line or the fuel line.
