Looks like the clearance is determined by the small coil spring at the top of the caliper. Pull that out (takes about 40lbs of tug) and it creates more room. We loosened the caliper mounting bolts and retightened those while pulling the caliper back, etc. Ended up creating enough space to get the spring/clip/retainer off the disc.
Ultimately, someway to shim that tough little spring at the top would be the best solution, but I can't tell how.
These brake pads came from stevelewissaab on the Ebay store. R&D also has pads as does SweedSpeed. The discs and drums and springs and calipers and hoses came from R&D and SweedSpeed and stevelewise depending on who had what in stock. Worth shopping around though, there was a big difference in the prices for calipers in particular.
