My battery area is in really good shape. I have a piece of rubber inner tube under the battery just to stop it from rubbing a hole through the paint. It probably also provides grip so it does not want to slide any. I thought about finding a plastic marine battery box and cut about 2/3 of the top off it so if there was ever any leakage it would be contained. The battery hold down mounts are just like in Johnathan's picture. Two threaded J-hooks going through an L bracket with wing nuts.
For the spare, I used a machine threaded J-hook, washer and wing nut. Mine goes through the hub hole instead of the bolt hole like Johnathan's picture. But I might try his way through the bolt hole to see if that fits better.
