Question about the proper way to install the rubber, rear oil pan seal. It's the half moon seal that goes over the rear main bearing cap. It comes with these little tabs on both ends that look like they should just sit on the block, but of course there's no room for that AND the cork oil pan gasket and they would also leave a high spot that the oil pan could not seal.

The manual appears to indicate that you install the rubber gasket into the groove in the main bearing cap, leaving the little ends sitting on the block, and then take a screw driver and force the ends into the groove so that they double over on themselves (see first photo). The diagram in the manual is not clear, but that's kind of what it looks like. This would also leave lumps where the bearing cap joins the block, no?

Wouldn't it make more sense to first poke the ends into the channels below the bearing cap where it meets the block? (second pic)

Third pic is just the rubber seal sitting loosely in place.
