We have an intermittent starter failure to diagnose. This is a 1973 Sonett III, so no starter relay in the circuit (those started in 1974 according to the Ashcraft book). From time to time, you go to start the engine, turn the key on and the gas gauge and oil light etc come on, then twist the key to start and everything goes dead: no starter, no solenoid clicking, no gauge activity, etc. Wait a bit and try again and it all works: gauges wiggle as the engine turns over and lights. The battery is new btw and voltage is good.

I know some among us would simply counsel learning patience . . . ;-P but I'd like to solve this. I'm guessing the solenoid first? But the gauges dying at the same time is an interesting symptom; almost like the entire battery is grounded.

Would also appreciate input on new starters and sources in case this thing is not repairable (it's the original starter and never been serviced). I've read the old threads on here about starters and there's a fair amount of chatter about fit/misfits. It sounds like there are two issues: starters hitting the frame on installation (apparently caused by lowered motor mounts, which we don't have), and location of the solenoid (there's a version of the starter where the solenoid lines up with one of the starter mounting holes, and a version where the solenoid is rotated 30 degrees to the right to avoid that).

Morris Sales in North Dakota sells 3 starter motor versions (including a heavy duty one) and on EBay they list a "small body" starter specifying "gear reduction drive." (see link)

Any experience with any of these or know of a higher speed starter that spins the engine faster?
