The fix Posted by BradW [Email] In Reply to: Alternative Mufflers?, BradW |
So to get 185/60R15 tires to fit:
1. The front is fine and has adequate clearance. At full extension (jacking up the car) there is a very slight rub between the tire and the spring.
2. The rears have adequate room to everything except the stock muffler (4.5" diameter). The solution is to remove the 'hourglass' stand-off rubber mount at the rear of the muffler and that lets the muffler move inward enough to clear the tires. Then loosen all pipe joints and cinch the pipes inward and bolt them down. On the left side we ended up with 10mm clearance between the muffler and the tire, on the right side it was only 4mm but that did the trick.
3. The wider, UHP low profile tires are quite a bit stiffer in the sidewall and make the car feel even more flat and glued to the ground. I always liked the original setup and thought the car cornered plenty flat even with tall, skinny tires; but the 185's make cornering a whole new level of 'flat.'
