This is a subject that seems to come back in cycles, like the Code Red worm! Consensus from the last time around:
-- Sure, it's possible to hang just about ANY engine out the nose of a Sonett if you don't mind hacking up the nose and relocating other stuff (presumably not a problem if you're fabricating your own tube frame.) Ice racers used to do all kinds of exotic mods along this line -- I recall seeing a photo of an incredibly ugly Sonett that had been stuffed with a Porsche flat-six for this purpose.
-- One problem: for anything other than ice racing, the last thing you want is to make the car even more nose-heavy than it is. That would seem to mitigate against splicing a 900 engine to the stock transaxle -- the engine is much longer than a V4, so would hang out even farther over the front, shifting weight distribution even farther forward. Same problem comes up with the Capri V6 -- as long as you've got the German-engine version -- even though it's otherwise easier as it IS (as someone else posted) just a longer version of the Sonett's Cologne V4 and bolts right up.
-- Another problem: The stock transaxle is hard-pressed to take the torque even of a performance-modified V4, so an even stronger engine is going to mean even more frequent transaxle rebuilds. Some people get around this by adapting a Super Beetle or Subaru transaxle.
-- One hot setup claimed to actually exist and work well in practice was a Mazda rotary engine mated to Subaru 5-speed via an adapter plate. The biggest problems with this, as described by the poster, were (1) adapting the shift linkage, and (2) keeping the car from going airborne at easily-attainable speeds well over 100mph (air dam definitely a good idea here.)
Whatever you do, remember to have fun and post pix!
