I'm a novice mechanic and I feel there's no better car for a novice... Everything in the Sonett is very straightforward except for the electrical system. The only negative is the small hood opening makes it difficult to get at all areas of the engine bay. The Sonett gave me a chance to get hands on with things like the the fuel system (replaced mechanical pump system with electric pump delivery) and carburetor (complete rebuild)... I'm not afraid to toy around in the Sonett and learn how to do repairs because you can't get yourself into too much trouble. The car is just not that complex. The only thing giving me headaches is the electrical system... I get one area fixed and the last area I fixed goes on the fritz. It's the perfect car for a novice mechanic like me.
